When it comes to decorative lighting, today’s mountain home poses many challenges. Open floor plans, oversized spaces, high ceilings and exposed beams often require boldly scaled fixtures that accommodate unusual size, scale and mounting considerations. Furthermore, the palette of luxurious materials and touchable textures used in these homes – think beautifully reclaimed woods, hand-hewn stone, natural textiles -- yearn for distinctive lighting that’s a cut well above the standard acrylic drum. Hammerton lighting provides shining solutions to these challenges and more.
What makes Hammerton particularly relevant to mountain markets like Aspen, Vail, Sun Valley, Jackson and Park City is our extensive knowledge of custom design and manufacturing, as well as our deep expertise across a wide range of materials. “Custom work represents over half of Hammerton’s residential business in mountain markets,” says Paul Verbecky, general manager of the builder division. “Off-the-shelf lighting is typically too diminutive in scale for these types of homes. Most decorative lighting is manufactured offshore, so fixtures are deliberately smaller to minimize material and freight costs.”
While the conventional ‘industry standard’ for custom lighting assumes a limited choice of finishes, shade colors, and rod lengths, Hammerton’s definition is “anything is possible”. Custom at Hammerton includes everything from modifying existing designs in size, shape, and scale to incorporating custom specified materials and creating one-of-a-kind signature designs.
Exposed beams, sloped ceilings, and distinctive features such as open stairwells and stunning window views are common in luxury mountain residences, and often require lighting with custom mounting or installation hardware. “If you’ve ever tried to hang a light that is not designed to have the canopy mounted on a sloped ceiling or a narrow beam, it can be a nightmare,” explains Paul. “Determining fixture scale, drop, canopy size, and position for large entries and custom stairwells is rarely a straightforward process. But we’ve been doing this for nearly three decades, so we understand how to tackle these challenges."
When it comes to style, the Hammerton Heritage line of customizable lighting designs is uniquely suited to the mountain aesthetic, incorporating design elements like authentic rawhide, textured kiln-fused glass, hand-forged branches and pinecones, and other nature-inspired motifs. Meticulously handcrafted here in our Salt Lake City, these awe-inspiring lighting designs are works of functional art.
